Find Me

If I’m out and about, I will most likely have my APRS beacon turned on. This includes when vehicle mobile and also pedestrian mobile (hiking).  Don’t panic if it appears my position hasn’t changed in hours, days or even weeks.  The maps will show my last known location.  You can confirm by the date if it is recent or not.

What is APRS?  Contrary to what you may read elsewhere, APRS stands for Automatic Packet Reporting System.  The system was developed by Bob Bruninga, WB4APR.  I use a couple of different devices to communicate my position.  In my Ford Escape, I use a Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS and the Argent Data Systems Tracker2.  While out pedestrian mobile I use my Yaesu VX-8.

If you would like to learn more about APRS.  Please listen to episode 35 and episode 36 of my amateur radio podcast called the practical amateur radio podcast.  In addition, this video better showcases the features of my mobile APRS setup currently installed in my Ford Escape.
