Yaesu VX-8DR – An upgraded version of the VX-8R

December 8th, 2009 admin No comments

According to details made available by Universal Radio, a new upgrade version of the Yaesu VX-8R will soon be made available.  You can learn more by visiting this link.  The new features of the VX-8DR are as follows:

The Yaesu VX-8DR is an APRS® enhanced version of the popular VX8R. Key additional features of the VX-8DR include:
   Smart Beaconing™ Function.
Station List memories has increased from 40 to 50.
The number of APRS® Message Memories has increased from 20 to 30.
   DIGI-PATH route indication function.
Heads up compass display to the GPS screen.
The Message received LED flashing rate is selectable.
The number of DIGI-PATH route settings has increased from 1 to 7.

According to the info on the Universal Radio website, the new Yaesu VX-8DR will be available from US retailers on 29 December 2009.  Unfortunately, a little late for Christmas.  But I suppose that is OK.

But what if you’re like me and you already purchased the VX-8R?  Well not to worry.   A VX-8R upgrade program will be announced shortly.  The upgrade will convert the existing VX-8R to a VX-8DR and adding the following functionality:

Smart Beaconing™ Function.
Station List memories has increased from 40 to 50.
The number of APRS Message Memories has increased from 20 to 30.
   DIGI-PATH route indication function.
Heads up compass display to the GPS screen.
The Message received LED flashing rate is selectable.
The number of DIGI-PATH route settings has increased from 1 to 7.

Unfortunately, in order to take advantage of the VX-8R to VX-8DR upgrade program, the radio must be returned to Yaesu in Cypress California and there will be a $60 fee.  The estimated turnaround time is 30-60 days.

I do consider it a shame that one can’t update the VX-8R to the VX-8DR without sending it in.  Especially if the update is software/firmware only.  If one already has the VX-8R programming cable and software from RT Systems I would think an upgrade installer could be developed that would update the radio.  Of course, the $60 fee would still apply since you are getting the additional functionality but wouldn’t need to send in the radio and be without it for the estimated 30-60 days.

I plan on sending mine in just as soon as info is available.  I’ll make sure to update the blog with that experience.

Until next time,
