A Mobile Friendly Blog

March 7th, 2010 admin No comments

Having been a user of various mobile platforms including Windows Mobile, Blackberry and now for over two years an iPhone, I enjoy websites which are customized to accommodate the smaller screen size.  While the iPhone OS certainly allows for areas of a regular website to be enlarged, having a site designed for a mobile device is an extra treat.

Being someone who truly appreciates these special mobile formatted sites I decided to see what could be done with my WordPress blog site.    I searched several and decided on WPTouch.   The plugin was easy to install and setup was a breeze.   The fine print:  I’m running WPTouch version 1.9.9.3 with WordPress version 2.9.2.

Here is how my WordPress Blog site looked on my iPhone before WPTouch.

And now, this is how my WordPress Blog site looks when viewed on a mobile device.

I hope others who frequent my blog and also run a WordPress blog will consider installing this plugin.

Until next time…

EchoLink iPhone App

February 7th, 2010 admin 2 comments

Being both an amateur radio operator and an iPhone user, I’m always excited to see a new ham radio related app arrive in the iTunes App Store.   Of course this is made even better when the app is free.  The latest edition in the category of ham radio related iPhone Apps is an EchoLink app.

The EchoLink software for the PC (Windows Operating System) has been available for a number of years.   Echolink allows licensed amateur radio stations to connect to one another over the internet.   You can use Echolink to connect your station (or your computer) over the internet to other amateurs using this same software.

Now with the EchoLink iPhone App, you can have this same functionality right on your iPhone or iPod Touch.  This new app was made available last week.  I downloaded and installed the EchoLink iPhone App on Friday and was quickly connecting to the various EchoLink nodes available.

Now some may argue the point of why?  Why is there a need for an EchoLink iPhone app?  Would a ham actually use this iPhone app to connect to a local repeater, call someone on the radio who probably has a cell phone in their pocket?  Why not just call them directly via the cell phone?

Well, the above is perhaps a valid question.  But I see this new app as being just another tool we have in our amateur radio toolbox.  Let’s say you’re on a train.  Using a hand-held transceiver on a train probably isn’t the smartest thing to do.  However, with the new EchoLink iPhone app connected to a 3G, Edge or wi-fi network you are set for lots of fun.

In order to use EchoLink you do need to hold a valid amateur radio license and have that license validated through the EchoLink website.  Once validated, you can download and use both the EchoLink PC application and the new EchoLink iPhone App.

Until next time,
